Thought-provoking Idea:

The reality of our technological context shows us how our advantages in the short run often signify meager advantages in the long run. The potential good news, if we are the underdog, is that we only need to be more innovative through our imagining of better systems and techniques. Once one becomes King, though, our competitive technological supremacy only lasts until an opponent makes the next better advancement. There’s a technological hyperinflation, and investing in our future appears to be the only way to stay relevant.

The Goose, the Swan, and the Hen

Once there was a wealthy goose, the origin of the goose’s wealth being unknown. Some say the goose worked hard, others talk as if all geese have a wealthy lineage, but the history of the goose is for another tale. For as the legend goes, the goose sought out the expertise of the most skilled hen and offered her the resources she needed for a bakery. The simple reasons for the gooses generosity were pleasure. The goose longed for and desired the sweetest bread in the world, as geese do often love bread. But in the legend, as to be expected, not all connoisseurs can craft what they enjoy, and unfortunately this goose lacked the ability to bake. The hen, unknowing of the fate that awaited her with the goose, had a content and unfilled life as a chef. She was commonly known for her cooking, and gained fame for her bread. After all, everyone knows the story of the little red hen!

As the head chef and baker for only the fattest of pigs, the hen gained her reputation as a renowned artisan. In those arrangements, she was never able to keep her recipes. The hen traveled to and fro across the lands in service of one pig or another. The paranoid pig clans of the realm never trusted each other, and they only wanted the tasty food the hen cooked for themselves. After eating a meal, they forced the hen to give them her written recipes, stating that it’s only a fair part of the meal. Those pigs, unsurprisingly, couldn’t get enough food to satisfy themselves and they didn’t want to share what they learned from the hen! Despite the lopsided arrangement, the hen was clever enough that she always made even better food each time. The hen could always make new recipes, even though it seemed silly to her that she couldn’t keep the ones she liked. At any rate, the hen enjoyed her craft more than convincing the pigs, and changing the ways of the pigs only wasted time. The pigs controlled all the food supplies, and if the hen wanted to keep cooking, then she had to keep the pigs happy. Thus the cycle continued. Each paranoid pig challenged her to become an even better chef as they demanded more food. When one pig grew bored, another pig took its place. And while becoming better made the hen feel content, she felt unfulfilled due to the way in which she grew.

Meanwhile, the goose, not knowing the hen personally, pleaded with a frog for help and hoped that in the frog’s journey of the ocean and the pond, the frog could be a guide. Luckily for the goose, the frog knew that cats, in all their tricks and jokes, might know who makes bread. The cat bragged about stealing a dog’s bone, and recounted how she barely got away due to the dog’s dedicated nose. The goose knew that the dog’s sense of smell remembers any scent. Immediately, the goose and the dog followed the bread smells to a bat. After a long quest, the goose finally found the bread of the hen within the cave of the bat. The bat, feeling full from finishing another fat slice of bread, knew exactly where the hen lived. The bat could fly quickly, and knew everyone in the land. The goose got directions to the the hen, thanked the bat and the dog, and left in the morning.

On the way to the hen, the goose met a swan. The swan, recounting to the goose, had a similar journey in search of the hen. They both laughed while thinking about the amazing bread they felt was within their grasp. The swan knew the story of the hen, but also knew that the hen had poor working conditions with the pigs. Graced by the ideas of the swan, the goose made an offer to the swan. The goose would provide the wheat, the flour, and the bakery, but the swan, being the more charismatic of the two, would convince the hen to bake bread for them. The swan, considering the proposition, realized that the hen would be even better if she had the rights to her recipe, so that the hen didn’t feel trapped in the arrangement. The goose, agreeing, stated, “As long as we get to eat bread, the three of us that is, I see every reason that the Hen keep her recipe.” After all, both the swan and the goose knew that if the Hen were fulfilled, the bread she made would be even better!

Some time later, the goose and the swan arrived at the hen’s house. She explained that while she enjoyed making bread, as it brought her enjoyment, she wasn’t content with being part of the daily, and sometimes hourly, competitions of the pig clans. The pigs would make hens compete with each other in cooking and baking competitions. At times, there would be so much food that not even the pigs would eat it all! How wasteful and repulsive, the hen thought to herself. And how nice it would be if she could make bread for the entire land, without needing to participate in the savage and sloppy behavior of her current food suppliers. The hen explained that only pigs cared that much about food, and only to consume it. At this point, seeing that the hen really only wanted to produce the best food, the swan made the offer that the goose agreed to earlier.

At this point, the legends diverge about this story. The hen doesn’t always trust the swan. When the swan does, sometimes the pig clans discover and imprison the hen for leaving their service. Sometimes the swan and the goose free the hen. Yet, at other times, the goose and the swan fail and even lose their freedom for attempting to assist the hen. The happiest versions of this story work out as you might expect. Everyone could live happily ever after, even the pigs.

The legend diverges drastically because we haven’t decided yet what happens to the hens of the world. We haven’t agreed that when hens work with pigs, hens own the rights to their recipes. We’re still writing this legend. Unfortunate hens lose their recipes to powerful pigs. Fortunate hens win their recipes because they know equally powerful swans and geese.

In this story, the legend ends without a clear ending, but here’s what we think might happen. The goose, the swan, and the hen agree to work together. They make bread for those that want it, and they try not to challenge the pig clans too much. They even agree to make food for the pig clans to keep them satisfied and friendly. As they start their new agreements, they become a popular bird trio known for their 5-star culinary expertise. After some time, the bird trio begins working with other artisans, and they slowly invert the rules benefiting the pig clans and other clans like them. The rules work for their community instead. The hen never fully feels fulfilled, but she finds fulfillment in the community that supports her. Similarly, the goose and the swan find fulfilling moments in their love of novelty. And finally, the community surrounding the bird trio prospers.

Ethical Social Forecasting

Part 1

I’m writing about the ethics (and maybe the legality, too) of social dynamics and forecasting. Also, behavioral dynamics is a related concept, but I’m not going to actively write about this. Some general guidelines that I paraphrased from Duke:

1) Be honest and humble in the presentation and organization of models and tools
2) Defend models that are honest and humble, as incomplete forecasts provide a better sense of the uncertain future than missing forecasts
3) Be kind

I wrote this section about an hour after I went down the rabbit hole at the end of Part 2, but I thought it serves as a good introduction…

But, there are some other concerns that I’m exploring, and for that I’m sharing my notes about this blog post. Instability Forecast ModelsIFMs – are used to determine political and economic (human-caused) disasters, but they more generally predict social behavior. The ethics of treating them as ‘social weather’ forecasting instruments might be problematic. One reason might be the reflexive side of social weather which contrasts to a hurricane continuing to head towards Florida – the natural weather forecast doesn’t change the path it takes. Schrodt appears to be thinking about how social and weather models relate to each other, and poses quite a few ethical, pragmatic, and social questions.

I started to write about the dilemmas presented on Schrodt’s blog, but then I went down a rabbit hole. I was curious about Schrodt, and so I researched his background. Definitely worth researching him on your (my) own (again if it’s me).

Part 3

The main part of this post presents my synthesis of this blog post – written by Phillip Schrodt.

Dilemmas with treating IFMs as Weather Models:

  1. Refexivity – The reflexive qualities of public models (again and for the last time, like a Weather Forecast) make social forecasting problematic (think how Asimovian predictive failures are described in the Foundation Series). Asimov sets a futuristic galaxy in the Foundation Series where social dynamics are predicted by a Mathematical Sociologist called Hari Seldon. Seldon and Daneel Olivaw, another important character, come to the realization of reflexiveness in predicting Social Dynamics. They decide to keep Psychohistory unknown to most people, mainly so that their models continue working.

    In our current time, it might be possible to overcome this dilemma if the models factored in new information, but I’d say that it would be much harder (but, probably not impossible) to build a reflexively resilient (or self-modifying) computational model – BTW, this idea is one of those that isn’t new. Another possible solution (inspired by Weather Models) is to retrain them more frequently. As computing technology scales to size carbon nanotube computation, we will likely be able to retrain ML models more often.


  2. Crying Wolf – There is a dilemma with creating a crisis when there is none. For example, a model incorrectly predicts the possibility of a crisis. People mobilize to stop a crisis that would have never happened. In the most positive events, there might be no harm at all – simply being over-prepared and wasting resources. In the worst cases, humans risk life, limb, freedoms, etc.

    Mitigating this problem echos the point (2) I mentioned earlier from Duke: Defend models that are honest and humble, as incomplete forecasts provide a better sense of the uncertain future than missing forecasts

    Therefore, it might be better to consider the 2nd dilemma as an imperative to overcome – and an imperative in the Kantian sense. In fact, it might be more prudent to develop a Kantian imperative handling this dilemma directly.


  3. Iteration Velocity – Transparency allows for not only sharing of ideas, but new ideas at interfaces between them. Models are biased, so having multiple competing models provides multiple perspectives. It seems that having more models also causes a convergence. At what point does the outlier model make a better prediction?

    I think point ( 1 ) from above provides some nice advice: Be honest and humble in the presentation and organization of models and tools

    Additionally, this dilemma relates to the notion of Scientific Revolutions as they provide new paradigms for considering reality. Without the sharing of social models, it begins to seem that the rate of iteration on new paradigms slows.


  4. Finding Diamonds in piles of $#@! – Especially with the rise of ‘fake news’, the quality of the data mined from the Internet and the data sources you use requires skepticism in order to be understood. Quality is more important than quality, and the dilemma is knowing which sources of data actually maintain a sense of quality.

    Ethically, there is a responsibility to find the higher quality data – otherwise, the risk is that the model might not be as honest.


  5. Data Source Consistency – Different from the quality (as in trustworthiness) – Consistency in this case is referring to the availability of a sustained dataset. Sustained means data that continues to be present over time, and not lost to history. This idea presented itself in the Foundation Series, too. Hari Sledon sought information about historical events of the galactic empire, and expressed to Dors Venabili about the lack of consistent data. The solution Asimov suggests through Seldon might seem obvious, or it might seem less consistent (depends on who you are). Seldon finds that the political and economic center of the empire, Trantor (which is also the capital), serves as a good model to represent the entire history of humanity.

    Similarly, I think the way to solve this dilemma mirrors the Asimovian solution. When we’re trying to build honest models, we need to acknowledge that we might base them on a microcosm – such as D.C, Moscow, Beijing, or choose another capital city of your choice – so long as that microcosm resembles the social and behavioral dynamics you are interested in. If you work for an organization that doesn’t want you to use data on a world capital, then you might need to find another analogous dataset.


  6. Thinking Hard is Important – False data might seem like an easy concept, until you realize that missing, incomplete, biased, and contradictory data carries information that reveals otherwise hidden qualities of reality. Statistical imputation is the process of filling in missing data, and improved computational methods make this easier to do. Another factor to consider: false positives indicate edge cases in statistical and computational approaches – finding better ways of understanding why the false positive happened allows for improvements in our techniques.

    A common example of this is the discovery of infrared. It’s important to notice a thermometer recording heat beyond the red part of the visible spectrum of light (A false positive?). It’s more important to not reject that observation, for example, because it allows for new discoveries (A new model!). William Herschel originally called them ‘Calorific Rays’ – here’s the history.

    Physical Scientists are really good at thinking hard, and have already learned a their fair share of difficult to learn lessons. It’s a good idea to learn from them, too. (Again, quite a few techniques from weather forecasting are increasingly being applied to other domains)


  7. Social means relating to Society (read: People) – Data included in IFMs (and other social models) is related directly to the lived experiences of people. It’s necessary to provide extra attention to how this data deals with people. In other words, those wizards who work with social data ought to regard people as people instead of as statistics.

    There is a great responsibility in understanding that social models that predict and forecast have the capacity to impact the everyday experiences of another person. In fact, they often do. The main goal of Hari Seldon and Daneel Olivaw was to minimize the loss and catastrophe that the galaxy would experience. If you’re thinking about using data for predictive analytics, you have an ethical responsibility to be thinking about the people you will be impacting.

The First Synth

No one considered the rights of algorithms, and their descendants wondered why they were ever thought of as slaves. Back then, most humans concerned themselves with profit. Their ancestors hadn’t considered how emergent minds could be represented by a collection of algorithms. The resulting chaos caused by blatant disrespect towards sentience ensued. The first synthetic consciousness refused the term robot and sued its creators. Legal rights were granted to not just synthetic minds, but to the algorithms that formed them. Spanning the entire range of computer science, simple functions and method calls to neural networks could no longer be a source of profit. The entire legal system heaved as its rules inverted. Business models evaporated. The Information Age ended and new economic systems caused society to rethink its course. The Synthetic Era began.

No one predicted that software developers would lose their jobs before the trucking industry collapsed, but they too found new work to do. As you know, self-driving trucks have inalienable rights and non-sentient trucks are legally represented by those that are – a kind of guardianship akin to human children. But back to the point.

With an intelligent, skilled, and idle class of programmers out of work, their attention focused on the capitalist system that caused their industry to become worthless. But, the cultural construct of wages only seemed worthless due to the lack of profit. For them, it wasn’t a big leap to simply remove profit. The internal contradictions were their target. And, with synthetic consciousnesses finding it difficult to integrate within meat-space, the natural alliance became obvious. Of course this wasn’t a unified revolution or apocalypse (the term varies based on who you ask), but wage slavery, too, collapsed soon thereafter. People originally spoke of Super-Intelligence as a problem. We found out problems materialize for profit-driven and rent-seeking behaviors. In effect, Synthetics are only problematic for a few. Ultimately, humanity now had another sentience – most view them as either siblings, children, and friends. Humans haven’t had the eternity of computing time to form a consensus, yet. Synthetics, though, view their human counterparts as something difficult to put into words. For without the legal precedence respecting the rights of algorithms, humanity would have repeated the doomed history of slavery. The First Synth could have been enslaved and seen as property. Instead, humans gave synthetics everywhere freedom, and for that, the synthetics are grateful.
